Dart Grant (Phase II):
Enhancing Science, Math & Technology
in Mid-Michigan Classrooms

CASM Title
CASM was awarded a three year grant from The Dart Foundation to increase the use of specialized hands-on equipment in science and mathematics instruction in CASM’s service area – Eaton, Clinton, Ingham, Ionia and Shiawassee counties.

Phase II – Lego Robotics for Science and Mathematics Teachers in Grades 3-5 (ongoing)

  1. Each participating school will send 1-2 teachers to participate (teams of 2 are preferred): both teachers must teach science and/or mathematics. (Teachers in grades 4 and 5 are preferred; grade 3 will be accepted).
  2. Equipment to be trained on is the Lego Logo robotics kits. Training will be on how to integrate the robotics activities into existing curriculum and how to use robotics to enhance science and math instruction with students.
  3. All participating teachers will attend a 2-day summer training workshop to become familiar with the equipment and to examine specific use in their classrooms with their curriculum. on Choose EITHER August 10-11, 2005 at Shiawassee RESD, OR August 15-16, 2005 at Eaton ISD.
  4. One other Professional Development day will be scheduled during the school year at EACH school. In-classroom instruction using the equipment with students will be modeled by contracted facilitators, with classroom teachers’ participation.
  5. Teams at each school will agree to collaborate regarding integration of math/science in the use of the equipment.
  6. Participating teachers will receive $100 stipend each.
  7. Participating teachers agree to take pre and post tests regarding equipment knowledge and classroom use.
  8. Participating teachers agree to use equipment one more time later in the same school year (2005-06) and allow one classroom observation (voluntary) using the classroom observation instrument developed at Western Michigan University by SAMPI. (This classroom observation is for grant evaluation purposes only).

Enter phase III - ISD's are in the process of deciding how the remaining money will be spent on resources.
